What does is take to create the strongest vortex?
Students are challenged to create the strongest vortex possible in a container to try to identify the variables that impact tornado strength in real life. Students observe that size and shape do not make a difference to the strength of a vortex.

This lesson was designed as an introduction to water pollution and the difficulties associated with water filtration. Students were challenged to create representative dirty water and create a filtration system to make it clean enough for your teacher and fellow classmates to drink.

How many drops of water can you fit on a penny?
As a way to engage students in learning about surface tension without explaining the phenomena first, I challenged students to try to fit as many droplets of 3 different liquids as possible. Then students must label the three different liquids according to how many droplets fit on the penny. If everyone correctly puts the liquids in order, from lowest to highest number then the class will celebrate

Who's for Dinner?
Students are challenged to create a food chain that consists
of four organisms in a Vermont ecosystem. In addition, they need to match the species with correct
vocabulary words, such as omnivore, and the correct amount of the sun's energy that it receives. This is a way to teach students about trophic levels.
